I have a large collection of opera DVDs. Quality varies often in relation to the date of the performance. Recent issues of recordings within the last 3 years have been fairly good.I have only a few pop concerts which include Bruce Springsteen, Bee Gees,Shania Twain, and to illustrate the diversity of my musical taste, Kylie. Can anyone suggest any live concert DVDs to check out. Literally any genre will be of interest.

Hey Fido,

Some clarification...

The HTIB system we have was bought with the express purpose of keeping the rest of the family out of the listening room... (I'm not a great fan of the evil CRT)

The listening room system is there solely for the purpose of appreciating music in 2-channel stereo (and never the twain shall meet..)

Now that that's clear, you'll understand why I only own one music DVD...

Having said that, I can wholeheartedly recommend that one DVD (if you don't already own a copy):

It's acually a double-sided DVD by Mike Oldfield containing live performances of:

a) Tubular Bells II (from Edinburgh Castle - in 5.1)
b) Tubular Bells III (from Horse Guards Parade - in PCM Stereo)

I've long been an ardent fan of Mike Oldfield's music and have 3 versions of TB I (1 x vinyl, 1 x original CD plus 1 x 25th Anniversary Edition Gold CD - which is brilliant!!)

The live arrangements from the DVD differ slightly from Mike's original studio arrangements, but are still damned good - particularly TB II.

So, there you have it - my sole music DVD recommendation - if you too like Mike Oldfield, then great; otherwise...

Thanks Dev

My main listening room is my study. I have in it 2 systems. One is hi fi the other an AV set up. I switch chairs according to which system is in use. I have a large plasma screen too big for the room but it certainly makes me feel involved in opera and concerts ( and live sport)I have read your views about surround sound with interest. I usually watch opera DVD in sterio mode.I enjoy my home cinema and accept it's music limitations. As I have written elsewhere my favourite sound is the live broadcast from the New York Met. Lights off, candles lit. Heaven! I will have a look at the Mike Oldfield DVD.

Regards.

i have to say that Metallica's S&M album, and the DVD to go with it are *amazing*!

Metal with an orchestra, which could have gone really well, or really bad, and this time it went amazingly!

As i said when i first joined this forum,i concider myself a music lover rather than an audiophile.I enjoy music in all formats and video dvd is one of them. The only irritating thing about music dvd,is the screen format (4:3).
When will the producers realise that most ppl have widescreen sets? Also, can't they just make a twin format,at least ?

One DVD I can recommend, especially if you like electronica (and quite possibly even if you don't) is :

Ritchie Hawtin : DE9 - Transitions

It is basically exactly the same as the CD but in 5.1 Surround Sound. He is a guy that pushes boundaries and this DVD is a prime example. The idea is that he takes extremely small samples from many different tracks and weaves them together making an entirely new sound. There can be 6 different tracks playing at the same time.
