General Hi-Fi Discussion:: Best bargain in hifi
Quite a few years ago I bought a Linn Sondek from a guy who had inherited it. He knew it was worth a bit but wanted shot of it. Anyway we haggled and I ended up paying £200 for it. Not too shabby I thought. When I picked it up it had an ittok arm and mint asak cartridge! Bargain

I sold it about ten years ago and really regret it. And yes I did make a healthy profit.

Distance Selling AudioVisualonline [by Witterings]

General Hi-Fi Discussion:: Distance Selling AudioVisualonline
Hi all,
Just thought I'd see what everyone else's thoughts are on here, my wife ordered me about 2 1/2 weeks ago a Denon M 39 from audoivisual online which was for my B'day this Monday just gone so not even 2 days ago and it's remained in the box unopened until then.
Granted by the book distance selling says you can return it in 7 days unquestioned and get a full refund but the unit wasn't opened until the day before yesterday and I offered to send something with proof of date of birth but they still want a re-stocking fee - 30% so £75 against an initial purchase of £250 - even if I exchange it for alternative goods which I was happy to do! What's your thoughts are they being reasonable do you think, as I say I appreciate by the book they're within their rights but when you've bought from them in the past it doesn't encourage you to go back to them again in the future.
It's a great system but something I hadn't realised you can't scan / fast forward / rewind through tracks but only skip to the beginning or the end of a track. I bought this unit for one purpose to sit next to my drum kit so I can scan a few seconds back and forward over difficult parts as I'm trying to learn new songs so I can play the hard parts again and again until I figure out what they are and learn them and they're often in the middle of a song.
Be interested to see what your thoughts are and whether occasionally a bit of trust / goodwill goes further than just playing it by the book??

Optimising my stereo set-up [by funcrusha]

General Hi-Fi Discussion:: Optimising my stereo set-up
Hi there,

I recently made a few quick buys to put together what I thought would be a decent entry-level stereo setup in my lounge. I started with a NAD 302 amp, NAD 502 CD player and NAD 5025 turntable. I matched these with an older pair of Tannoy Mercury MX1s I'd had for a long time.

Upgraditis set in rather quickly and I purchased an addition amp, a newer NAD c720bee. And I picked up a set of fairly heavy steel speaker stands, so that my MX1s didn't have to rest on a table top.

The addition of the c720bee and the stands has turned what felt like a fairly warm system into one that's slightly too bright and analytical.

Given what I've just described, I wonder if anyone could advise of improvements I could make to this system or that I should consider.

Thanks for reading.

Funcrusha

The hi fi systems have always proved very good to every one.
They provide better sound quality.
be it home theater systems or Hi Fi Speakers

Upgrade to my current streamed music system [by NigelCollins]

General Hi-Fi Discussion:: Upgrade to my current streamed music system
Hello,

I have a few questions re upgrade to my existing streamed music system:

My current set up is:

PC running itunes / Logitech media server with CD's ripped as Apple lossless.
A squeezbox duet picking up files via wi-fi
a Dac Magic
Linn Intek Amplifer
EPOS ES14 speakers

I want to move to a NAS server and physically connect to a network player.

I am thinking of upgrading to:

NAIM ND5 XS
NAIN NAIT XS

leaving the Epos ES14's until later to change.

So three questions:

1. Does this sound like a reasonable upgrade path (I have listened to and really like the Nait but have not heard the Network player yet. Can you suggest any other upgrade paths at around £3K

2. Would you recommend I stick with the Logitech media server or move to another one (I also use the squeezbox radio for albums and radio in the kitchen when cooking and wouldnt want to loose that option)

3. I specifically like the ease of use of the logitech system - particularly the interface, to quickly find albums and see the cover art. I belive Naim do an iphone app for the ND5 - has anyone any experience of it and is it easy to use / navigate through your music collection.

Many thanks

Nigel

Speaker set up [by Gluperthealien]

General Hi-Fi Discussion:: Speaker set up
I am confused, Not for the first time.
I have an OPPO BDP-83 Blu ray player.
A Denon 2310 Amp
They sound great together (In my ears anyway) I have my system rigged up for 7.1.
Mission cinema 7 + Q acoustics satellites as surrounds.
I should explain what I call surrounds as this may be confusing. I call the speakers at the side of the room SURROUNDS and the speakers behind REAR SURROUNDS.
I have tested the system with AIX records audio calibration disc HD music sampler. The 7.1 test all works well. However when I test on 5.1 I get no Rear surround just Surround (Side)
It still sounds good but when I just had a 5.1 set up the surround sound was from the rears. This has been highlighted by the 40th Ziggy anniversary DVD with a 5.1 DTS mix. I just feel that it would sound better with the surround rears. Can I adjust or is the current configuration better.

Martin
