Mission 737r restoration... Mission impossible? [by kimation2005]

Loudspeakers:: Mission 737r restoration... Mission impossible?
Hi,
I am Elio, a (not ancient) roman audiophile. I bought for just 30 euro a Mission 737r (picture in attachment) with not original transducers. I bought it because enclouser is in good condition. My intention is to try a restoration. I would search on the web the original transducers. I have the first, very hard, problem: Retrieve brand & model of original tweeter / woofer. I am (almost) sure that mine are the second version of 737r (however serial is ), because baffle is grey (not silver). Can somebody help me? Somebody know which are original models? Somebody know which others Mission speakers were fitted with same transducers of mine 737r?

If somebody has read this message till here and has understood my english... thank for your help!

Regards

Elio

Mission 751 Freedom vs Mission 771e [by slasimov]

Loudspeakers:: Mission 751 Freedom vs Mission 771e
Hi everyone, first post here for anyone who is mad about old mission speakers.

I have recently renewed my love for hi-fi (even though most of the seperates I have ever owned might be considered pretty low-fi) after years of bringing up kids etc.

I have been through quite a lot of budget kit over the years but have only ever possessed 2 sets of speakers in the last 30 years, both Missions. The first were so old I cannot remember which model they were but the second and still current (even though they are getting very old now) is a set of the original 731 budget speakers.

My setup is in the bedroom and is not a huge room. I am currently using a Denon PMA350se amp and a Denon DCD835 CD player with the Mission 731's on stands. I also sometimes use an Arcam Alpha CD player instead but the Denon sounds better to my tastes.

I do not have the money to spend on expensive equipment so my plan is to do what I have always done and that is to spend say £100 - £150 on an old but well reveiwed peice of equipment that in its day was worth a lot more money than it is now, rather than spend the same amount on new equipment.

Now I would finally like to replace my speakers and I am in a quandry because after spending a lot of time studying reviews and seeing what is available on ebay, I am split between two Mission stand mount speakers and cannot decide which would be better.

The two speakers are the 751 Freedom (which has been well reviewed on this forum) and the 771e.

My question then (finally) is to anyone who has owned or compared these two speakers (seeing as I am unable to listen to them myself). Which speaker would you choose and why?
I am not asking if these speakers are better or worse than any other make I just want to make a comparison so that if I do decide to bid then I can make an informed choice.

Any help would be appreciated and I apologise for the post being so long ;)

Advice please - Wharfedale 1970s speakers? [by chales84]

Loudspeakers:: Advice please - Wharfedale 1970s speakers?
I've come across a pair of Wharfedale Melton II vintage speakers online that I am tempted to buy for nostalgic reasons. I grew up with something similar in my folks' living room!

Speakers are described as working and I am prepared to do some repairs if necessary. (Never worked on speakers but am pretty able at this kind of thing).

I am happy to put the work in and don't mind at all they are physically bigger than modern speakers, that's part of the joy. But I wonder if I will end up with something worth listening to ... or if I should just put nostalgia to one side.

So how do I judge if it's worth a trip to London? I know there are a lot of people on here more knowledgeable than me – any advice gratefully taken!

Loudspeakers:: Back to the Future
Imagine its 1991.

You have just returned from your local HiFi shop with a lovely NAD 3130 a Marantz CD63 mk2 SE and a pair of Mission 780se speakers. You love the sound but your wife hates the black ash speakers.

So you have to replace them with something similar but in a nice wood finish.

Your budget (its 1991 remember) is £250-300

What would you buy?

Thanks

P

Loudspeakers:: Bi-wire connections
Hi. Bi-wiring will give you better soundstaging both left to right & back to front, clearer, more defined sound & seperation of instruments.

If you want to try it, go along to your local hifi store and ask if they'll do a sale or return deal on some decent speaker cables - they may even loan you some demonstration cables. then you can take them home & try for yourself!

Loudspeakers:: Principal Design Speakers help please
Hello
I have a pair of Principal Design PD150 speakers, has any one heard of them????
They are fantastic, but at low volume one of the bass/ midrange drivers distorts, but its fine at louder volumes.
I thought the drivers were KefB200 so bought two , they arnt, look very similar and I now believe they are a french driver made by Audax.
I have tried fitting one of the B200 drivers and it works well but dosnt sound as good.
Principal design are long gone, from memory it was owned by a bloke called Christian Thomas and was in Stockwell Road London, its a shame to bin them as the sound quality is fantastic, oh if any one has a pair they would sell, let me know.
I have been told a man called Dr Penfold was a key part of the company?

Heybrook HB2 - silent speakers [by lanzafame]

Loudspeakers:: Heybrook HB2 - silent speakers
Hello

An over enthusiastic friend recently used my hifi (technics SU 7700 amp with heybrook HB2 speakers) and although the music was being played loud, i didn't think it was insanely loud. Now however, the speakers don't reproduce any sound.

i have checked the amp, it works fine with other speakers so i assume the speakers have blown.

there is no visible damage to the cones or tweeters.

Does anyone know what actually happens when a speaker blows, or if it's worthwhile trying to fix it? not sure if i should write this off, or get speakers repaired, or try and sell the cones and tweeters separately .

Any advice greatly appreciated!

thanks

tom
