I have been offered a Rega Planar 3 turntable for £100
its second hand- age is unknown. I dont know what the tone arm is but the cartridge(?) is a Linn K9 Had it set up for a week to see if I like it but at this price should I just go buy something newer and first hand? like a project debut? please help!

If it's in good working condition, and the seller is trustworthy £100 looks like a good deal to me.
I think they've been going for around £140 on ebay...? Docfoster

£100!
bargain, be surprised if you can get a player today that would sound better for less than £1000. People still bang on about them today, and due to their popularity there are lots of spares/upgrades on ebay. A friend of mine swears by her rega, and it does sound very good. Cheers Kev

The Rega Planar 3 turntables are much better than the cheaper Projects. Even the early Rega Planar 3 with an "S" shaped tone arm, like my own. If the Linn K9 cartridge is not worn out, put it on Ebay, for some reason some people will pay you a good price for them! With this money and some of your own, buy some thing like a Goldring1042, (about £115).

In actual fact this is incorrect. The magazine "Which" ran tests comparing some of the cheaper Project tables including the Debut II and the RPM4, and found that they were either superior to (in the case of the RPM4) , or equivalent in quality to the Rega2 & Rega3. I can confirm as much from my own listening to the RPM 4. My own turntable is an ancient Dual 504, which is in now way inferior to the Rega Planar 3. In the end it is one's own hearing which must be the deciding factor.

It all comes down to personal preference and opinion ultimately; what sounds right for my ears might make an LP sound liek a dog's breakfast being wolfed down (if you'll pardon the mixed metaphor) to another listener!
Compare and contrast if you can, but in the end, quality will out - the Rega P3 comes with the superb RB300 tonearm (found on many a high-end deck) while the RB250 was upgraded by Origin to great effect some time ago. Project have done their bit to keep vinyl hardware doing the rounds (sorry about that, awful pun!) however, but in the end, it's the listener that decides what's best - as it should be!
