Cables : The wires that connect youir amplifier to your speakers. The quality of copper cables is expressed as a number of nines (9). This represents the amount of pure copper there is in the cable. For example, a 5N cable would be 99.999x% pure copper, where 'x' is any number. Good cables have many strands, or thicker wires, and some have arrows indicating the direction they must be installed. The arrows point from the amp to the speakers.
Cartridge : The device which actually plays a record. It converts the pits and troughs in the record's groove into electrical signals for your amplifier. See also moving magnet and moving coil.
CD-R : A recordable CD. You need a recordable CD drive, in order to record onto the special recordable disc. It cannot be erased once recorded, but more can be added to it, if there's room.
CD-ROM : Uses CD as a Read Only Memory, mainly for computers. 700MB can be stored on a single CD as of Jan 2004.
CD-Text : This allows CDs to store short text strings containing information such as Album name, track name and artist. Your CD player must support CD-Text for it to be seen.
Coloration : This term means music that does not sound as it should. Examples of coloration are "boomy" bass, or "splashy/tinny" treble.
Compact Disc : Standard 120mm disc, which stores information digitally, read by laser optical system. Originally designed for music storage the CD is now used for many applications.
Component Video : A connection system. Usually connecting a DVD player with a TV or projector. It operates using 3 color signals - Red, Green and Blue, each sent through a different cable.
Composite Video : A connection system. Usually connecting a DVD player with a TV or projector. It operates using a single cable on which the entire picture is carried. Connectors are usually yellow phono connectors, to distinguish between other phono connectors.
Compression : Radio stations use compression to reduce level differences between loud and quiet parts of audio. It helps in-car sound, but can be terrible through a HiFi tuner.
Crossover : Circuit inside speakers which splits high frequencies to the tweeter and low frequencies to the woofer.
